THE POETICS OF A PLASTIC BAG 2010
This is a project which start from need of drawing again. A plastic bag became
a siple model for group of drawings and printmakings. Later on a plastic bag became object itself when I use it as
a material for several architectural objects. Finely a plastic bag came back to its own fuction when wraped up the new book called The Architecture in The Bag.
The firs part of the project: THE POETICS OF A PLASTIC BAG – DRAWINGS
/Charcoal drawings on a paper 1000x700mm/
My project developed from the need to feel drawring again. For the model I took a plastic bag; although a commonly used „uninteresting“ object, it is rich both typologically and especially concerning the shape.
The second part of the project: THE POETICS OF A PLASTIC BAG – PRINTMAKINGS
/Dry point on a paper 1200×900 mm/
While creating the grafic prints, similar to the proces of drawring of plastic bags, was important to loosen the action of creating from difficult topics and stories. The physical coping with metal material and continuous print itself were important. First prints included more descriptive scenes of reality. The plastic bag with its stripes seemed redundant, thus I repetedly entered into the matrix, stratched away the decor and details of the scene until I had only dark consistent substance.
The third part of the project: THE POETICS OF A PLASTIC BAG – OBJECTS
/objects – each of them made from one or two plastic bags/
During working on the firsts parts of projects I felt need to shift my topic in a more conceptual direction. I saw this direction in an empty content of the plastic bag. What to fill it with or not to fill it with? Is it empty? No, it is not. There is space defined by a kind of walls as in a building. At first I started to shape the plastic bag to various inexplicit forms. Suddenly the forms gained its name and became simple modles of particular architecture.
The fourth and the last part of the project: THE POETICS OF A PLASTIC BAG – BOOK
/silkprint on a paper, hand-made binding/
I decided to make out this theme of plastic bag architecture and publish a book. I created a series of these bag-made buildins. Narrow possibilities of the plastic bag allowed to develop to several basic models which were needed to make more particular. I used siple grafic signstypical for each of the architects. These signs together with photos of the models made from plastic bags should show the essential pillars and typical signs of each of the architectonic attitudes. I searched for the most convenient types of font for each architect. Both the print techinque – two coloured seriography- and the binding are hand-made. Finally I inserted the printed book inside anything else but a plastic bag. Here come s the reason for the books name: Architecture in a bag. In this way the empty content of the bag was metaforically filled.
